Changing Work Hours

We asked Moms:
How can you change your work hours to meet the needs of your family?

Hi,
I just wanted to comment on what a great job this site does! I am currently working on a term paper for my Sociology Class (working moms vs. stay at home moms, stigmas for both)...and I am finding a wealth of information here. I had no idea that all of this support was available.

Thanks Again!

I am looking for help to write a proposal requesting flex time. I work for a small company that did not have a maternity policy prior to my pregnancy. With that in my the reaction to my request for flex time was less than favorable.

I would like to appeal directly to the owners of the company with a written request for flex time. I am looking for sugestions and support for this project.

Thanks in advance for your help.

For over 2yrs within my present employment (which consisted of 1 woman and 2 men) it had been working practice for employees to start at 8.45am and finish at 3.45pm with a working lunch, providing flexibility for starting and finishing within the work place, and with the project providing a good service (with no complaints) to the service users. Myself and another female collegue commenced employment to replace the 2 men leaving(I was being redeployed due to childcare responsibilites,my collegue had been working under these conditions for 6 months before i commenced) and she was issued with a new contract like mine, confirming same conditions. However 4 weeks into the job we were told our contracts were incorrect and should have stated a later finish of 4.45. I had also received verbal confirmation of my times at the interview to ensure i could cope with them with regards to childcare. We eventually signed our new contracts after great duress, however it was expected from our employer, a Local Council Department, that we commence our new times the following day. There was little consideration given to our childcare arrangements or family needs. Would this be a case of indirect sex discrimination ?

When my 2nd son was born my boss agreed to let me go part-time Mon-Thurs 8:00-4:30, total hours, 32.

When my first son started kindergarten this year my boss agreed to let me start at 7:30 and leave at 4:00. I could have went 7:00-3:30 but I know I could not get my 2nd son (or me)up and moving to go to daycare(work)that early. Each child goes to different people since I live in one state(kindergarten)and work in another(preschool). This works out well since I can pick my preschool son up by 4:15 and be at my sister-in-laws house (the sitter) to pick my son up no later than 5:00. His bus comes at 3:40 and that way he is only at daycare for one hour. My husband takes our kindergartner to the sitter and I handle the preschooler. It works best if you can do as they suggested here and have each parent responsible for one aspect. My children have had no ill effect and this gives my husband and myself more one-on-one time with one child even if only in the morning. I used to do all the drop-offs and pick-ups so this gives me a break only having to get one child ready in the morning.

Work of warning though - my work load did not change and I have to get everything done in those four days. My boss has no problems and works with me as long as I can get my work done in those four days. I know my deadlines so this has never been a problem for me since I started this 3-1/2 years ago and starting earlier is actually better since most of the office does not come in till 8:00 and you can get a lot done in 1/2 hourwith no interruptions.

I am an accounting manager in private practice. There are hardly any part-time positions at my level. The problem also is not just trying to find a part-time position but trying to work a normal 8 hour day. The nine to fivers are not appreciated in today's corporate world no matter how much work you can get accomplished in those 8 hours. Also, a lot of companies are not even paying for lunch these days so workers end up having to work a 9 hour day.
