Wisdom of MothersPumping
I conditioned my body so that I could pump once during the work day (at lunchtime -- save it in a cooler and bring it home), once when I got home from work, and once before going to bed. This yields a total of about 20 oz, which my daughter consumes the next day. I also have some frozen breastmilk, for emergencies. My baby will be 10 months next week, and I plan to give her breastmilk until I switch to cow's milk. She's only had formula once, for a week, because I was taking anti-biotics that weren't safe for nursing babies. I nurse her first thing in the morning (it's a very cozy way to wake up!), and sometimes in the middle of the night, if she's having trouble sleeping. Otherwise, she gets expressed breastmilk in bottles.
When my baby was born, she wouldn't nurse. I purchased the Medela Pump-n-style and pumped like crazy to get my milk to come in. Each time she was hungry, I put her to the breast & if she wouldn't latch on, I fed her expressed milk. Even though she wouldn't nurse for at least 3 weeks, my milk came in really, really well. After she started nursing, I would pump when she was finished. This milk I froze. When I went back to work, I sent her to the sitter with the oldest of the frozen breast milk. During work I would pump once and freeze it that evening when I got home. At night, in the mornings, and on weekends, I nursed her like normal, pumping after she finished.
I have two sons, ages 3 1/2 and 7 months. I used family leave (12 weeks) after each was born and nursed them during this time. I continued to nurse them before and after daycare and at night as needed. I bought the Medela Pump in Style breastpump (money well spent) and pumped twice a day while at work. I did this until they were about 6 months old. It takes a little more planning and packing but I felt like it was well worth the extra effort.
