Charging the Net
While overall tennis participation has fallen over the last 10 years, there is reason to be hopeful. A new crop of talented and exciting players - Venus and Serena Williams and Alexandra Stevenson -- has added some new energy to the sport. The average prize for winning a women's professional single tennis match is almost $100,000, with the Grand Slam events -- Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon -- exceeding $369,000 for first place. The United States Tennis Association has initiated several campaigns aimed at attracting new players. The "Tennis Free For All Plan," now in its second year, features free lessons to attract youngsters. The total number of cities participating in the program grew from 85 in 1997 to 152 in 1998. The number of lessons in 1998 totaled 120,290 compared with 71,337 in 1997. Funding for the program reached nearly $2 million in 1998.
