Getting the Jump on Legal Expenses

by Susan Farrell

Let's face it. Legal costs are rising, as if they weren't already out of reach. Although it can be intimidating to think about going so far as to represent yourself, it pays (or should I say "saves") to do as much research as possible yourself and to become as knowledgeable as you can about your case. This can save you time asking questions, help you to ask very specific questions, be more well-informed and proactive on your own behalf, and be aware of options. We have a tendency to think that when we hire a professional, that means they are all-knowing, but I can tell you from experience and from the experiences of others, that professionals do not and cannot know all the laws and loopholes.

Remember that laws vary from state to state and sometimes even within the state when it comes to divorce, custody, child support and visitation. In addition, a judge has the final say in each case and can override other provisions and laws if he determines that the circumstances necessitate it.

To help you however, we've checked out a few sites and have compiled a list of some we have found informative and helpful. Many attorneys provide a first consultation of up to an hour for free to discuss your case with you. Many HMO's, insurance companies and employers are also offering employee assistance plans that have free or discounted counseling, including that from attorneys. You may want to use those resources to verify facts and information, ask general questions, and then plan your best approach to your situation.
