Back to the Basics: A Homespun Holiday
Who says Christmas has to be about expensive, store bought gifts? As the saying goes, "children learn what they live." Be creative and change the focus this year, celebrating with a homespun holiday. A few ideas to get you started:
- Have a "handmade" only rule for decorations this year
- Make your own Christmas cards and gifts (See our Christmas Crafts for ideas)
- Go caroling video tape or record the children singing as a gift to relatives
- Go for a sleigh ride
- Go sledding
- Make snow angels
- Pop popcorn and string popcorn and cranberries to decorate trees outdoors for birds
- Buy a potted tree instead of a cut one, to plant outdoors in the spring
- Spend a day baking and package up the baked goods as gifts and attached home made gift tags
- Scan photos or make copies to create a calendar or collage as a gift
- Use clay or cement molds to create handprint molds of your children for gifts
- Share the joy of the holidays with others. For ideas, see The Best Gift of All: Helping Others
