The Makings of a Great Valentine's Day

by Susan Farrell

Valentine's Day is about love. Not just that one special "love-of-a-lifetime" kind of love though — kids love to celebrate it, too. They love the chance to make cookies, cards, decorations, have a party, and just celebrate a day in a special way with someone special to them.

Make this Valentine's Day a family event and maybe even start a new tradition. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Plan a special meal together. Break out the china, or buy some fun bright red plastic paper plates. Decorate the table with hearts and doilies. Make or use special placemats. You could make a favorite dish or just have fun with the menu, such as all red items, special desserts, etc. Maybe even invite some special family or friends over also.
  • Write a poem together with your children and help them create a special plaque by framing it and giving it to someone special in their life, whether it be a teacher, grandparent, neighbor or friend.
  • Make cookies or a special treat, wrap them up pretty for valentines, make a special note or card to attach signing it anonymously or as "Your Valentine," and leave it on a doorstep of a neighbor or friend.
  • Find a special way in the community to share your love. For example, call a local senior citizen center or retirement home and ask if it would be all right if you and your children brought in a home-baked treat, table or window decorations or cards. Purchase some dog or cat food and go with your children to donate them to the Humane Society or animal shelter in your area.
  • Send E-cards to everyone you know who has email. Visit the postcard section on Moms Refuge.
