The daily tug-of-war between your career and your kids can leave you torn between the two worlds. Where do you turn? The Juggling Workshop! Ask questions and share suggestions about juggling work and family.

This week's question:
How do you know when it's time to go to counseling with your child? Have been having same problem and not getting any positive results; this has become major issue
and am becoming increasingly upset.
-- Linda
Linda,
I fought myself with this very question concerning my eldest when he
was younger. I think when you get to the point where it's really
becoming an issue, counseling is definitely called for. I had to
really overcome the idea that somehow, needing counseling was an
admission of defeat in my parenting skills, or that I had a less
than perfect child. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
It only took a few sessions for us to get the help we needed, and
then I felt stupid for having let it drag on for so long.
If money is a problem, most states (if you are in the US) and
counties have counseling available for a sliding scale fee -
although they do have pretty lengthy waiting lists because of that.
If your child is in any way suicidal or in a major depression, make
sure you tell them that and they can get you crisis counseling.
I guess bottom line, is - if you're desperate enough to ask the
question "out loud" it's time to schedule a counselor. Good luck to
you and your child!
