This week's question:

How do you know when it's time to go to counseling with your child? Have been having same problem and not getting any positive results; this has become major issue and am becoming increasingly upset.
-- Linda

Linda,

I fought myself with this very question concerning my eldest when he was younger. I think when you get to the point where it's really becoming an issue, counseling is definitely called for. I had to really overcome the idea that somehow, needing counseling was an admission of defeat in my parenting skills, or that I had a less than perfect child. Nothing could have been further from the truth. It only took a few sessions for us to get the help we needed, and then I felt stupid for having let it drag on for so long.

If money is a problem, most states (if you are in the US) and counties have counseling available for a sliding scale fee - although they do have pretty lengthy waiting lists because of that. If your child is in any way suicidal or in a major depression, make sure you tell them that and they can get you crisis counseling.

I guess bottom line, is - if you're desperate enough to ask the question "out loud" it's time to schedule a counselor. Good luck to you and your child!

Sounds like it's time!
