This month's question:

Is there any research done to prove that children of working moms are just as happy and well-adjusted as children of stay at-home moms or moms who work part time? I recently went back to work full time and am feeling tremendous guilt about being a horrible mom!
-- Lynn

Lynn,

The guilt comes with the territory. But as long as you know your child is begin well cared for, you can stop being so hard on yourself.

There's an on-going study about early childcare by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (called the Early Child Care Study) that has been releasing their findings over the past two years. To echo a headline in the Los Angeles Times yesterday, "Cancel that Guilt Trip: Day Care's Good for Kids After All."

What they have found so far is that children in larger preschools learn more and behave better than those in small home or nanny situations. The one warning that a lot of people got mileage out of last year was that long hours spent away from a mother can affect the quality of her interaction with her child. But not if the mother makes a point to interact and bond with her child whenever she is with the child.

The key factors are the quality of the mother-child relationship and the quality of the day care environment. Since I'm sure you rate high on both, don't worry. You're probably doing fine.

Working together we can make a difference.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! My son is 8 weeks old and I just went back to work 3 days per week. I'm still going to feel guilty, but just not all the time.
-- Dawn

I am a new mom (my son is one). I also feel guilty about working even though I work from home an average of one day a week. But it's good to know I'm not alone.
-- Cecelia

The book "A Mother's Place" addresses the subject well. I thoroughly enjoyed the book - it helped with my guilt!
