Juggling Workshop Working Moms' Q & A
The daily tug-of-war between your career and your kids can leave you torn between the two worlds. Where do you turn? The Juggling Workshop! Ask questions and share suggestions about juggling work and family.

This month's question:
This has been a bad year for sick kids, I ended up going to work with a bad strep infection because I've used up all my sick days and (I teach) I get docked $156.00 per day for any time missed between now and the end of the school year. My question is this--how do you find out about sick child care in your area. I've checked around--we recently moved to a different state and I have no family near by--nobody seems to know if anything like that is available in this area.

K,
When you're looking for child care information, one of the best places to
start is the yellow pages of your phone book. Look under "child care".
Many states/counties have resource and referral centers that have
information on child care providers. While they're set up to give
information about well-child care, they may know about backup child care in
the area. Also see if there is a Visiting Nurses Association. In some
places they provide sick child care. Finally, you might try contacting some
of the larger daycare centers in the area and ask if they have any
suggestions. One other thought: if there are any major employers in your
area, call their human resources department and ask if they have any
suggestions.
BTW. Once you get some names/suggestions, be sure to ask for references and
check them out. Hope this helps.
Working together we can make a difference.
