Fern Kupfer

Fern Kupfer is the author of three novels and a nonfiction book, Before and After Zachariah, which describes her family's life with their severely handicapped child and the decision for residential placement. She has written frequently about this subject and has been a national spokesperson for family advocacy.

Her first novel, enthusiastically reviewed in The New York Times Book Review was excerpted in the Ladies Home Journal and nominated for the Jewish Book Award. The next novel, No Regrets, was published by Viking and serialized in Redbook; it has been a best seller in Germany and reprinted there in a special edition. Love Lies, a mystery, was published in 1994 by Simon and Schuster.

She is currently an associate professor of English at Iowa State University and, since 1993, a regular columnist for Newsday, the Long Island newspaper. Her fiction and short essays have appeared in numerous popular journals and magazines including Parents, The Womens' Review of Books, Women's Day, Newsweek, Redbook, Family Circle, and Cosmopolitan; her work is frequently anthologized in writing texts and collections. A new essay, "Trust," will appear this spring in Mirror, Mirror On The Wall: Women Writers Explore the Fairy Tales That Have Changed Their Lives.
