Kristene Fortier

Kristene Fortier, mother of Casey, 9, and Michelle, 5, traded in her Silicon Valley career for pots, pans, and an apron to become a stay-at-home mom when her youngest was born. Kristene fell into the same trap that plagues many parents—either making multiple meals or resorting to pizza or hamburgers for the sake of the children. Most parents like variety and kids—well, kids won't eat what they don't like.

"I decided that as long as my children were going to be picky eaters, my husband and I could at least enjoy our meals. We love ethnic cuisine with spicy seasonings and we both are health conscious too. I began to cook more adventurous adult recipes with robust flavors. By making a few simple modifications, I can make a more kid classic version. I sent in some of my recipes to local newspapers and started teaching cooking classes as a way to earn extra income."

The Whole Family CookbookKristene is the author of The Whole Family Cookbook: Two-tiered Meals To Please Both Parents And Kids" by Birch Lane Press, 1998. She writes a weekly column for the Palo Alto Daily News and other feature stories for Sunset magazine, the Oakland Tribune, the San Jose Mercury News, and a variety of other San Francisco Bay Area newspapers.
